Nor'easter Hammers Jersey Shore As Atlantic City Ties Third Biggest Snowstorm In City History

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) -- Atlantic City got hit hard by the nor'easter but it's declaring victory Saturday night. Blizzard conditions battered the shore town, which recorded 16 inches of snow to make it tied for the third biggest one-day snowfall in the city's history.

The snow emergency in Atlantic City has been extended from Monday to Tuesday.

Mayor Marty Small Sr. said road crews have been working around the clock for four days preparing and it's paying off.

He said crews are finished salting and plowing for Saturday night but they'll be back out in force at 6 a.m. on Sunday.

"More importantly, I would like to thank the residents of Atlantic City," Small Sr. said. "Yes, you – for obeying and following the city's snow removal ordinance, which restricts parking in certain areas. Because of you, it made us more efficient and it made our job much easier and we thank you."

The wind was also an issue as crews worked to clean up the snow.

Despite the plows paving the way, driving to the Shore Saturday along a snow-covered Atlantic City Expressway - was just as slippery as being at the Shore, where the winds whipped along the famed boardwalk for the brave few who braved the blizzard.

Along Atlantic Avenue, the shops and streets were mostly empty, filled only by the sound of the shovels.

"I woke up this morning and got a head start on it," Zach Trigg said.

After the final flakes fell, the locals started to venture out, some more successful than others

"I was trying to go home, and I turned too quickly as I was stopping and slid right into a snow drift," Burce Holzman said.

While the white stuff was a hassle for many, several go-getters Eyewitness News spotted were only seeing green

"Just doing door dash trying to make some money," Kevin Miller said.

"The rent is on the first, and I'm going to have my rent money on the first," Amir Mainor said.

Donning a bathrobe and a hustle, Mainor was racing to beat the sunset

"We're trying to get people out of the driveways and pathways before it gets real cold and icy, you know," Mainor said.

Small wins were the name of the game in Atlantic City.

"Everyone kind of lends a hand if they can, it's just that kind of place," Trigg said.

The big concern now is the ice. It's expected to get slick as temperatures continue to fall.
