Abington Police Subdue Man Possibly Attempting "Suicide By Cop"

ABINGTON, Pa. (CBS) -- Shots were fired as Abington Police officers struggled with a suicidal man overnight.

Upper Dublin police got a report to lookout for an armed man.

"Had left his home and his family was afraid he was going to go out and commit suicide, " says Abington Police Chief William Kelly.

He says the 32-year-old may have actually wanted to commit "suicide by cop."

So, at midnight, an officer found him in a parking lot at Limekiln Pike and Mount Carmel Avenue in Glenside. Police say the officer patted him down after he refused to take his hands out of his pockets.

Kelly says the man then pulled out a gun and told police to shoot him. Then, a sergeant lunged at him.

"They wrestled over the gun for a considerable period of time."

Kelly says the gun went off five times but no one was hit.

"They eventually got him under control."

Police say the sergeant suffered minor injuries during the struggle.
