9 Displaced By Fire In Kingsessing

By Jenn Bernstein

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Nine people were displaced after a late night fire ripped through a set of row homes in the Kingsessing section of the city.

Firefighters responded to a fire on the 5400 block of Belmar Terrace around 10:45 Monday night.

A man and two families received help from the Red Cross.

The relief organization says among those displaced is five children, including a two-year-old and a seven-month-old baby.

Everyone was able to make it out of the home safely.

The Red Paw Relief team is providing supplies for pets owned by the families, which includes a cat, a dog and a turtle.

A cat is still missing.

Firefighters onCe again battled extreme conditions as temperatures dropped into the teens.

At one point, fire officials were forced to close the block because water used to fight the fire turned to ice, and caused unsafe conditions on the sidewalks and street.

A salt truck was deployed to help melt the ice.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
