Officer tried to pull over stolen vehicle before crash on North Broad Street, police say
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An early morning car crash in northwest Philadelphia that sent three people to the hospital happened after officers tried to pull over a suspected stolen vehicle, police said Tuesday morning.
According to Philadelphia Police, an officer patrolled near 15th Street and Rockland Street around 3 a.m. when he saw a blue Kia Optima that was believed to be stolen. When the officer attempted to stop the car near the 5000 block of North Broad Street at a red light, police said the Kia driver "disregarded the signal" and sped off north on Broad.
At the 5700 block of North Broad, the Kia crashed into a Buick traveling south on Old York Road, not far from the Fern Rock Transportation Center.
Police said a 14-year-old driver and 14-year-old passenger were found inside the Kia with multiple injuries, and the Buick's 34-year-old driver was also hurt.
Earlier in the morning, Philadelphia Fire officials said all three people involved in the crash had to be extracted from their vehicles and were taken to Einstein Hospital. Police added later in the day that the two 14-year-olds are being held as prisoners. All are in critical condition but expected to survive.
A police vehicle sustained some minor damage when the stolen Kia struck an officer's car earlier in the morning just after 3 a.m., police said. The officer didn't suffer any injuries in the hit.
