3 On Your Side: Best Deals For Labor Day Weekend Shopping

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- With the Labor Day weekend soon upon us, many people will hit the stores in search of holiday sales. 3 On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan has advice on which deals you may want to target over the next few days, and which things to leave for later.
When it comes to bargains one of the first you'll see is when you fill up your tank to go shopping this Labor Day weekend. AAA says the current price of gas is $3.44 a gallon, that's 15 cents less than it was at this time last year. Good thing, since nearly 35-million Americans are expected to travel this weekend, the most since 2008.
If you plan to spend time shopping, Kiplinger.com says look for deals on appliances that help you put food on the table. Expect discounts of up to 45 percent on appliances, but before heading out to the stores you may want to first check prices online as you may be able to snag a deal using coupon codes.
Next, think about all that summer time spent outside and chances are you'll find opportunities for sales. Bicycles go on sale this time of year, so does camping and hiking gear and patio furniture. In fact Kiplinger's says last year, Lowes, Target and Walmart took up to 75 percent off patio furniture over Labor Day and discounts look to be in the same range this year.
Also look for mattresses go on sale this weekend with discounts up to 60-percent from Sears and Macy's.
But if you're looking for a gas grill, both Kiplinger's and Dealnews.com say hold off for a bit longer. Even though you'll see discounts on grills, the prices will drop even more later in September.
