3-Month-Old Rookie Goat Holds Her Own In Annual Bock Fest Race

POTTSTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- The Kentucky Derby is to horses what Bock Fest is to goats.

This weekend Churchill Downs is crowded with locals and tourists alike but last weekend people throughout the Delaware Valley were flocking to Pottstown for Bock Fest at Sly Fox Brewery.

The annual event on May 1 brought out a few rookies including 3-month-old Maverick and his twin sister Goose--who managed to advance to the semifinals.

"Semifinals aren't enough. Next year we want the gold," said JP O'Connor, the human "Top Goat" team member who was at the other end of Goose's leash.

The rules are simple: Don't let go of the leash. Don't pull the goat. Let the goat cross the finish line first.

Heats began at 2 p.m. and more than 40 goats competed. The competition concluded with the naming of the Maibock beer brew after the winner, two-year-old Blue Hazel.

O'Connor who is from Drexel Hill and a Bock Fest rookie himself, described this year as a learning experience. He's confident his team will be better in 2017 when Goose is a little older.

Ultimately, the day-long event was a win with German Oompah music, German food and plenty of German brews to go around.

"I don't think I'm ever not going," said O'Connor. "I'm in for life."
