2 Dead, Including 1 Child, In North Philly House Fire

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A young child and an older woman are dead following a house fire in North Philadelphia early Saturday morning.

Crews responded to the fire just after midnight on the 1500 block of N. 6th Street.

When they arrived on the scene, officials say heavy smoke was seen on the second and third floors.

Crews discovered the 69-year-old woman and the five-year-old boy after responding to reports of people being trapped. Neighbors say its a grandmother and grandson. Both were pronounced dead around 12:30 a.m.

"I just heard people crying, just sad people waiting for the worst and that's a really sad moment, I'd hate to be in that moment," neighbor Eliwd Carrasquillo says.

The fire was placed under control around 12:40 a.m.

Authorities say five residents made it out of the home alive. They credit working smoke detectors with alerting the family.

Red Cross officials say they are assisting 11 people.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
