1 Dead In Police-Involved Shooting In Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., (CBS) -- A 20-year-old man is dead following a police-involved shooting in Atlantic City Tuesday afternoon, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said.

Shortly before 1 p.m., Atlantic City Police received a ShotSpotter system alert of multiple gunshots detected, and received confirming 911 calls reporting shots fired, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.

Police responded to the area of Route 30 and Pennsylvania Avenue.

Upon arrival, the Prosecutor's Office says police encountered a male, later identified as Shawn Brown, 20, of Atlantic City.

During the subsequent confrontation, officers shot Brown.  He was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center—City Campus where he was pronounced dead. Next-of-kin have been notified.

The Prosecutor's Office says preliminary investigation indicates that three Atlantic City Police Department detectives in plain clothes were involved in the confrontation with Brown, and that Brown was allegedly armed with a handgun.

A semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the scene.

Detectives from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit are interviewing witnesses, processing the scene, and collecting any existing video of the confrontation.

An autopsy by the New Jersey State Medical Examiner's Office is scheduled for Wednesday.
