Phillies-Astros World Series Game 1: Live updates and more

HOUSTON -- Nick Castellanos trusts anything Rob Thomson does. 

Anything?

Well, Castellanos at least trusts the Phillies manager with baseball decisions. 

The Phillies battled from behind to beat the Houston Astros in a thrilling 6-5 victory on Friday night at Minute Maid Park to take a 1-0 lead in the World Series.

HOUSTON -- J.T. Realmuto added to his monster game with a solo shot in the top of the 10th inning to give Phillies a 6-5 lead. 

HOUSTON -- Nick Castellanos has come up short a couple of times with his bat in Game 1, but he made up for it with a sliding catch in the bottom of the ninth inning. 

Jeremy Pena hit a short fly ball to right field that would've sent Jose Altuve home and won the game for Houston, but Castellanos was able to make a helluva of a play. 

We move to extra innings. 

HOUSTON -- Seranthony Dominguez is coming in to replace Ranger Suarez in the bottom of the eighth inning. 

Suarez allowed a single to Kyle Tucker and then manager Rob Thomson yanked him from the game. 

Tucker is the go-ahead run. 

HOUSTON -- Hector Neris was with the Phillies from 2014 to 2021, but he signed with the Astros during the offseason. 

In Game 1, Astros skipper Dusty Baker went to Neris in a big moment of the game against his former team.

With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, Neris struck out Nick Castellanos to keep the game tied at 5-5.

With Schwarber's stolen base in the top of the seventh inning Friday night, the Philadelphia Phillies slugger speedster stole the first base of the 2022 World Series, which means everyone in America can get a free Taco Bell taco.

Earlier in the night, Alec Bohm had an RBI double that helped the Phillies get back into the game.

And in the bottom of the sixth inning, Bohm made a nice play along the third base line to get the Phillies out of the bottom of the sixth inning. 

Bohm snagged a ground ball hit by Martin Maldonado and threw him out from foul territory. He's grown a lot defensively this season, and that play displayed that. 

HOUSTON -- Aaron Nola's night is over.

After 4 1/3 inning, Nola was replaced by Jose Alvarado. 

Alvarado finished the bottom of the fifth inning by popping out Yordan Alvarez and striking out Alex Bregman. 

Nola finished his night with five strikeouts, two walks and allowed six hits that resulted in five earned runs. 

Justin Verlander was pulled in the top of the sixth inning for reliever Bryan Abreu. 

HOUSTON -- After trailing 5-0, the Phillies have tied the game.

J.T. Realmuto's RBI double in the top of the fifth inning tied the game, 5-5. 

Brandon Marsh led off the inning with a double. Kyle Schwarber followed him up with a walk.

Justin Verlander got out of the inning by striking out Nick Castellanos. 

HOUSTON -- After Aaron Nola got shellacked in the bottom of the third, the Phillies responded and finally got to Justin Verlander. 

Alec Bohm hit an RBI double to right field with two outs in the top of the fourth that knocked home Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos to make it 5-3, Astros. 

Before that, Nick Castellanos hit an RBI single that scored Rhys Hoskins. The Phillies' first baseman started the inning with a single to center field. 

The Phillies now have some life after Verlander looked dominant up until that point of this game so far. 

HOUSTON -- Kyle Tucker is having himself a game. 

The Astros' right fielder hit a three-run home run to right field off Aaron Nola, his second of the night, to give Houston a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. 

HOUSTON (AP) — Grammy-nominated singer Eric Burton lost track of the lyrics during "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Friday night's World Series opener between Houston and Philadelphia.

With players and staff lined up on the field for the traditional pre-game ceremony, and a giant American flag unfurled across the outfield, the Black Pumas band leader went off track on the second line. He sang: "What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last streaming" instead of "gleaming."

HOUSTON -- The Astros got Aaron Nola in the bottom of the second inning. 

After Kyle Tucket went yard, Yuli Gurrel and Chas McCormick each hit a singles.

Martin Maldonado then hit an RBI single to give Houston a 2-0 lead. 

Nola got out of the inning by getting Jose Altuve to ground out into a double play.

Nola is already up to 37 pitches after two innings. 

HOUSTON -- Kyle Tucker got the Astros on the board early in Game 1 of the World Series.

Tucker hit a changeup from Aaron Nola 359 feet to right field to give Houston a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

HOUSTON -- Justin Verlander had another dominant inning in the top of the second.

Bryce Harper versus Verlander is a matchup we'll be watching closely the whole series, but Verlander got the best of the NLCS MVP this time. He got Harper to strike out on three straight fast balls. 

Nick Castellanos popped out and Alec Bohm grounded out to end the inning. 

It's early, but we might be in store for a pitcher's duel at Minute Maid Park.  

HOUSTON -- Aaron Nola followed up Justin Verlander with a pretty solid first inning. 

Nola struck out Jose Altuve and Jeremy Pena to start the inning. He then walked Yordan Alvarez, but he rebounded against his old college roommate, Alex Bregman.

Nola got his former LSU teammate to pop out to end the inning. 

HOUSTON -- The first inning went Justin Verlander's way. 

The likely A.L. Cy Young winner got the top of the Phillies' order down 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning.

Verlander struck out Kyle Schwarber, forced Rhys Hoskins to pop-out and got J.T. Realmuto to line out to right field.

Now, it'll be Aaron Nola's time to make his World Series debut. 

HOUSTON (AP) — Players' union head Tony Clark said years of inattention by Major League Baseball had contributed to the World Series being played without any U.S.-born Black players for the first time since 1950.

"It is truly unfortunate that any young Black player may be watching these games tonight is not going to see someone that looks like them and as a result may make a decision against continuing to play our great game and move on to something else," Clark said before Friday night's opener between Houston and Philadelphia. "That is disappointing and disheartening."

The 50-year-old Clark was a major league first baseman from 1995-2009, making the AL All-Star team in 2001.

"When I first started playing, players made sure, Black players on your team and other teams made sure that you were encouraged and supported, recognizing that even at that time, the numbers weren't as high, so you were less likely in a lot of ways to see someone that looked like you or came from the same place that you did," he said. "Toward the end, less and less of those conversations were being had because there were less of those players to have them with."

Kyle Schwarber, in his first season in Philadelphia, led the National League with 46 home runs. He also established himself as a leader in the clubhouse. Ahead of Game 1 of the World Series against the Houston Astros, manager Rob Thomson spoke about Schwarber's leadership.

"He's been incredible. He brought the entire team together. Young, experienced guys. Young guys. When guys are going bad, he's the guy that has his arm around him and helping him out," Thomson said. "And this experience, he's been through it. All that information is so, so valuable."

Bryce Harper showed up to Minute Maid Park in a Mike Schmidt jersey ahead of Game 1 of the World Series. Looks like the reigning NL MVP is ready to go.   

The day Phillies fans have been waiting years for is finally here! Game 1 of the World Series between the Phillies and Astros is Friday night and the Phillies just released their World Series roster. 

The Phillies' 26-man roster includes 13 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and five outfielders Here is the roster: 

Pitchers (13): Left-handers – José Alvarado, Brad Hand and Ranger Suárez. Right-handers – Andrew Bellatti, Connor Brogdon, Seranthony Domínguez, Zach Eflin, Kyle Gibson, Nick Nelson, Aaron Nola, David Robertson, Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler.

Catchers (2): J.T. Realmuto and Garrett Stubbs.

Infielders (6): Alec Bohm, Rhys Hoskins, Nick Maton, Jean Segura, Edmundo Sosa and Bryson Stott.

Outfielders (5): Nick Castellanos, Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh, Kyle Schwarber and Matt Vierling.

HOUSTON -- Will Gilmore's father died last year in November, but he'll be with him in the upper deck at Minute Maid Park this weekend during the World Series. 

Gilmore, a Kensington native, and his father shared a special bond with the Phillies. The two had been going to games with each other since Gilmore was a 3-year-old at Veterans Stadium when Curt Schilling pitched for the Phillies in the 1990s.

And on Friday night when the Phillies face the Houston Astros in Game 1 of the Fall Classic, Gilmore is bringing in a picture of his father, Bill Gilmore, aka "Happy" or "Hap," to honor him.

It's a beautiful Friday in Philadelphia, but we wish we could say the same for Houston. Game 1 of the World Series will feature a severe weather threat across Houston. 

Heavy rain and damaging winds could impact the area around Minute Maid Park making it hard to get to the game. 

Luckily for the Phils, there is a retractable roof so the game should start without a hitch.

Back here in Philly, the weather is looking fantastic for the weekend.  

Typical fall weather shapes up for us on Saturday with rain chances returning late Sunday night.  

Unfortunately, it looks like rain will impact the Phillies for Game 3 on Monday night!

Last week, we told you about a family of Phillies fans who ran into some of the Phillies players at breakfast while in San Diego for the NLCS. 

Well, that same family is in Houston for the World Series this weekend and Gordon Ernst Jr. tells CBS3's Brandon Goldner if he sees any players or other Phillies fans while having breakfast he'll "pick up the tab."
