Labor Day 2022: President Biden delivers speech at union hall during Pittsburgh visit

Pres. Biden spends Labor Day in Pittsburgh

President Joe Biden traveled to the battleground states of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin on Labor Day with the November midterms about two months away.

Biden visited Milwaukee before traveling to Pittsburgh to deliver remarks at the United Steelworkers of America Local Union 2227 in West Mifflin.

Air Force Once landed in Pittsburgh around 4 p.m., and Biden spoke for about 20 minutes at the union hall. He departed Pittsburgh International Airport just after 7 p.m.

It was Biden's third trip to Pennsylvania in less than a week, following trips to Wilkes-Barre and Philadelphia.

Biden talks accomplishments

Joe Biden touted his accomplishments in 18 months as president while addressing steelworkers and local leaders in West Mifflin.

"Under the American Rescue Plan ... we created nearly 10 million jobs in my first 16 months," Biden said. "Ten million new jobs in America. The American Rescue plan also created and saved millions of jobs. Why? Because here in the state of Pennsylvania and almost every state didn't have enough money to keep teachers on the payroll, to keep firefighters on the job, keep police on the job, keep nurses and docs on the job. And so what did we do? We, in fact, gave them the money to make sure they did it. And this governor, your governor spent it well."

"We passed the Butch Lewis Act," Biden added. "They told me I could not do it. They really did. Remember, we didn't get any Republican votes for it, but we got it done."

The president also mentioned the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act.

"We're building roads and bridges and ports," Biden said. "As a matter of fact, I'm going to be back here not too long from now because we got $60 million to rebuild that bridge that collapsed."

The Fern Hallow Bridge collapsed on Jan. 28. It is currently under construction.

Biden says democracy is on the ballot

President Joe Biden hit on numerous topics while delivering a speech in West Mifflin at United Steelworkers of America Local Union 2227, including the importance of November's election.

"The fact is that I think there are periods in history where we reach certain inflection points, where everything that comes after is going to change what it is going to be for the next generation. We are in one of those points," Biden said.

"This new group headed by the former, defeated president, we found ourselves in a situation where we are going to look forward or backwards," Biden added. "And it's clear which way he wants to look. It's clear which way the new MAGA Republicans are. They are extreme. Democracy is really at stake. You can't be a democracy when you support violence when you don't like the outcome of an election."
