Philadelphia Eagles beat Detroit Lions 38-35 in season opener at Ford Field

DETROIT (CBS) -- The Lions fought to the end but the Eagles came out on top, beating the Lions 38-35 in Week 1 at Ford Field. A 4th quarter push by the Lions put them within three points of tying the game, but on the Eagles final drive of the game, Jalen Hurts convertered a 4th & 1 to secure the win.

DETROIT (CBS) -- Things are getting physical in Detroit. Lions safety Tracy Walker has been ejected. 

The ejection game after Hurts scrambled for five yards and took a late hit after he slid. It resulted in two roughness penalties against the Lions and Walker's ejection. 

The Eagles continued to drive down the field and Boston Scott scored the fourth rushing touchdown of the game. The Eagles were up 38-21. 

But, the Lions responded, marching down the field and scoring TD on a 1-yard run by Jamal Williams to start the fourth quarter. 

With 14-minutes left in the game, the Birds are up 10 points, 38-28. 

DETROIT (CBS) -- The connection we've been waiting for. On the Birds' final drive of the first half, Hurts connected with A.J. Brown for a 54-yard pass. The drive ended with a field goal and put the Birds up 24-14. 

There have been many questions surrounding Hurts' arm, and as our Sports Director, Don Bell just tweeted hitting Brown in stride is a good response. 

Overall it was a dominating first half by the Eagles. The Birds put up a total of 290 total yards and have a 10-point lead over the Lions. Our Pat Gallen calls the first half "eventful," noting that they managed to hold the lead despite a lot of penalties and ugly plays. 

The Birds get the ball to start the second half. 

DETROIT (CBS) -- Eagles' defense is locked in. James Bradberry's 27-yard pick 6 puts the Birds up 21-7 over the Lions. Prior to that Lions' drive, the Eagles' defense forced three consecutive 3 and outs. 

In the Eagles' previous offensive drive, Miles Sanders took it to the house on a 1-yard run for his first rushing touchdown since 2020. 

DETROIT (CBS) -- The Birds are on the board after a rusty start. An 83-yard drive by the Eagles ends with a rushing touchdown from Jalen Hurts on 4th and goal. 

The game is now tied 7-7 and Hurts has accounted for 129 of the Birds' 137 yards. 

In a poll we posted earlier this afternoon, 38.6% of voters picked a rushing TD from Hurts as how the Birds would score the first TD of the year. 

DETROIT (CBS) -- It wasn't the first quarter of football we expected to see from the Philadelphia Eagles, but there's plenty of time to turn it around. Detriot is up 7-0 at the end of the first, but the Eagles are driving down the field and are 22 yards from the endzone on 2nd and 8. 

It was a rusty start for the Birds. The Lions steamrolled through the Eagles defense on the first drive, including a 51-yard run from Philadelphia's own D'Andre Swift. Jamal Williams put the Lions up 7-0 with a 1-yard TD run. 

The Eagles' first drive included Hurts bailing the offense out a number of times and ended with a turnover on downs after an incomplete pass to A.J. Brown. 

The second series tightened up, the Eagles defense forced a 3 and out and it wasn't a perfect drive for the Eagles offense but Hurts led them down the field connecting with A.J. Brown for his first catch of the season with the Birds. The Birds are driving heading into the 2nd quarter.
