Running game leads Eagles past Vikings in Week 2 victory

Eagles fans pumped for home opener at Lincoln Financial Field

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Jalen Hurts scored two rushing touchdowns and DeVonta Smith and D'Andre Swift had scores as the Eagles beat the Minnesota Vikings, 34-28, on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field. 

After being a non-factor last week against the New England Patriots, Philly native D'Andre Swift had a huge night. The St. Joseph's Prep product had 175 rushing yards on 28 carries to go along with his touchdown. 

 

Eagles improve to 2-0

Jalen Hurts scored two rushing touchdowns and DeVonta Smith and D'Andre Swift had scores as the Eagles beat the Minnesota Vikings, 34-28, on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field.

The Eagles' defense gave Kirk Cousins and Vikings problems all night and came up with big plays. 

Overall, the Vikings had four turnovers in the game as Fletcher Cox, Justin Evans, Kelee Ringo and Nicholas Morrow recovered fumbles for the Birds. 

The 2-0 Eagles will have some extra time off as they'll face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football in Week 3.

Swift TD extends Eagles' lead

D'Andre Swift, the hometown kid, scored his first touchdown for the Eagles to give them a 34-21 lead late in the fourth quarter and seal the win.

K.J. Osborn TD cuts Eagles' lead

The Eagles had control of the game, but now the Vikings have some life. 

K.J. Osborn caught a 10-yard pass from Kirk Cousins for a score to make the game, 27-21, with 7:41 left in the fourth quarter.

Jordan Addison TD cuts Eagles' lead

It seemed like the Eagles were going to pull away, but not so fast. 

Rookie wideout Jordan Addison caught a 62-yard bomb from Kirk Cousins to cut the deficit to 27-14. 

Meanwhile, the Eagles are losing more guys to injuries. 

Quez Watkins and Avonte Maddox were both ruled out and Boston Scott is currently being evaluated for a concussion.

DeVonta Smith TD extends Eagles' lead

Finally, the Eagles' offense looked explosive. 

Early in the third quarter, Smith hauled in a 63-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Hurts to give the Birds a 27-7 lead over the Vikings. 

Smith has three catches for 123 yards and one touchdown to lead the Eagles.

Eagles capitalize on Vikings TO

Jalen Hurts recorded his second rushing touchdown of the night to give the Birds a 20-7 lead early in the third quarter after Josh Sweat's strip-sack. 

The turnover by the Vikings was their fourth of the night.

Eagles lead Vikings at halftime

It's been another sloppy game for the Eagles, but they lead the Vikings, 13-7, at halftime at the Linc. 

Jalen Hurts has completed 10 of his 13 passes for 84 yards and one inteerception to go along with a rushing touchdown. He's also ran for 30 yards on the ground on nine carries. 

D'Andre Swift leads the Eagles in rushing yards with 62 on 12 carries, while Jake Elliott has booted in two field goals. 

The Eagles have been very lucky so far against the Vikings. 

Minnesota nearly scored in the second quarter, but Justin Jefferson coughed up the ball on the 1-yard line and it was ruled a touchback. The fumble was one of three Vikings turnovers in the first half.

Eagles retake lead in second quarter

After struggling on offense, the Eagles finally had a decisive drive. 

The Eagles pounded the rock and capped it off with a 1-yard rushing score by Jalen Hurts to take a 10-7 lead. 

Philly native D'Andre Swift was featured heavily on the drive. He has 12 carries for 62 yards in the game. 

Meanwhile, Quez Watkins and Avonte Maddox are both questionable to return.

Vikings take lead

The Vikings' offense finally got going against the Eagles' defense. 

Minnesota marched down the field on a nine-play, 55-yard drive and T.J. Hockenson hauled in a 5-yard touchdown pass from Kirk Couson to give the Vikings a 7-3 lead in the second quarter.

Elliott misses FG after Eagles recovered fumble

The first quarter between the Eagles and Vikings so far hasn't been pretty. 

So far, there's been a combined three turnovers. The latest, a fumble by the Vikings, gave the Eagles the ball again. 

But, they didn't do anything to take advantage of it. 

The Eagles went three-and-out for the second time of the game and then Jake Elliott missed a 55-yard field goal attempt. 

Elliott was perfect on field goals last week in the win over the Patriots.

Hurts throws interception

The Eagles and Vikings are exchanging turnovers. 

Right after the Eagles recovered a fumble on a punt return, Jalen Hurts threw an interception on third down to Vikings safety Theo Jackson. 

Now, the Eagles have the ball deep in Eagles territory.

After the Eagles went three-and-out, the Vikings coughed up the ball on the punt return. 

Justin Evans forced a fumble on Brandon Powell, which was recovered by Nicholas Morrow.

Eagles settle for FG on first drive

Jake Elliott booted in a 24-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead with 12:26 left in the first quarter. 

The field goal was set up by a 54-yard bomb to DeVonta Smith from Jalen Hurts on the fifth play of the drive. 

The Eagles, like last week, struggled once they were in the red zone.

An Eagles fan took a chance and it looks A.J. Brown fulfilled it. 

Pat Gallen was on the sideline as an Eagles fan stood in the front row of the Linc with a sign asking Brown to sign his jersey. 

Kudos to Brown for coming through and making the fan's night.
