Students among several hurt in Yorktown school bus crash
YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Several people were hurt, including five students, when a school bus crashed Friday morning in Yorktown, New York.
Investigators believe a HUMMER SUV cut in front of the bus after its driver may have suffered a medical emergency. The crash was reported around 9:30 a.m. on Route 132 near the Taconic State Parkway.
Police said the SUV driver was hospitalized with serious injuries, along with a passenger who suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The bus driver and five students, ranging in age from 17 to 20 years old, were treated for minor injuries.
Witnesses said neighbors rushed to help with the rescue.
"I'm on the couch and, all of a sudden, I hear, 'boom!' It was a bad explosion," neighbor Carmella Pervizi told CBS New York. "We couldn't get the doors open, so I called my son to get one of those break-away glass breakers, and he came and we actually got the door out."
Video from the scene appeared to show the words, "Lakeland Central School" on the side of the bus. It had serious front-end damage, and the driver's airbag was deployed.
Yorktown Police Chief Robert Noble said it's unclear if the bus was on its way to a school at the time.
The road is closed between Barger and Wildwoods streets as the investigation continues.
