1 Dead In Police-Involved Shooting In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – There has been a deadly police-involved shooting in Yonkers.

Sources tell CBS2 it happened on Aqueduct Avenue near Van Cortland Park.

The FBI and the Yonkers Police Department were conducting an investigation in the area at the time.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, the stakeout for a suspected bank robber turned deadly on Friday.

Under the falling snow, the FBI and Yonkers Police worked to secure the scene where shots were fired.

"We just got home from the airport around 3:30. Just walked into the house and next thing heard a big loud noise, and we kind of, it startled us, and we were like, what is that," Eileen Beere said.

Beere was with her cousin when they heard the shots, minutes later police arrived on her doorstep.

"Detectives were knocking on the doors, knocking on our door asking us, did we see anyone, do we have any video cameras, asking questions," she said. "Apparently the FBI had been camped out there all day looking for this guy and he turned up, and I think he got shot, gone to the hospital."

The FBI confirmed a suspect was shot. Sources said he was wanted for a robbery. He later died at an area hospital.

The massive police presence shocked neighbors and Beere's cousin visiting from the UK.

"I'm from London, where it happens a lot but not on your doorstep and not in a residential street," she said, "So not where I'm from, so it is quite unnerving I suppose."

The suspect's name has not been released, and it's unclear which bank robbery he may have been wanted for.
