Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano wins unprecedented fourth term

YONKERS, N.Y. -- History was made in Yonkers on Tuesday as Democrat Mike Spano won an unprecedented fourth term as mayor.

Results show Spano with 60% of the vote versus challenger Anthony Merante.

From the crime rate to the graduation rate, Spano told voters Yonkers was making steady progress and needed stable leadership.

He was rewarded with an easy victory and will get four more years at City Hall, winning an unprecedented fourth term as mayor of New York's third largest city.

Spano claimed victory an hour after the polls closed, saying he ran a positive campaign that avoided much of the ugliness that often marks Yonkers politics.

"They rejected the small-mindedness, and they've said enough is enough. We saw it, we went down that path before, we're not going down that path again. We're a different city. We're a city that's going through a renaissance. We're a city that we can all be proud of to call home," Spano said.

Mayor Spano is the husband of CBS2 News This Morning anchor Mary Calvi. She had no role in the coverage of this race.

Also in Mount Vernon, Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard became the first Mount Vernon mayor to win re-election in 20 years.

In Rockland County, incumbent district attorney Tom Walsh easily fended off a write-in challenge from attorney Theresa Difalco.
