$5,000 Reward Offered In Shooting Death Of MLB Prospect In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Yonkers Police Department is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect in the fatal shooting of a promising young baseball prospect.

Michael Nolan was shot in the head and arm while standing near his car outside of the Burger King on Central Avenue at around 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 18, police said. The 23-year-old died from his injuries on Oct. 9.

Authorities said the suspect fired the shots from a moving vehicle.

"A vehicle drove by and we're told by witnesses that the driver pointed a gun out the window and fired five or six shots in that person's general direction," Yonkers Chief of Detectives Timothy Hodges said.

At the time of the shooting, Nolan's father, Jimmy Nolan, said his son was a 6-foot-8 lefty pitcher with a promising future.

"He's a good kid," he said. "He was drafted by the Oakland A's. He had a full ride to college."

The GM of the Oakland A's released a statement on Twitter saying: "On behalf of the entire A's organization, I send my deepest condolences to Donna and Jimmy Nolan. Michael will always be a member of the A's family, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends for their tragic loss."

Though the investigation is ongoing, police initially indicated that drag racing may have played a role in the motive for the shooting.

"This is not a random shooting," Yonkers Police Chief Charles Garner said at the time.

So far, no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Yonkers Police Detective Division at 914-377-7725. All calls will remain confidential. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can also text the key word YPD plus the tip to 847411.
