Mom Takes Selfie In Wrong Student's Dorm Room; Image Goes Viral

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Manhattan mother somehow mistakenly landed in a stranger's dorm room and took a selfie, and her mistake ended up going viral.

As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, Deanna Pilling had just arrived at Utah State University from New York City to help her 18-year-old daughter, McKenna, pack up her dorm room for the summer.

Or at least Pilling thought she had arrived in her daughter's dorm.

"I was just standing there thinking wow, she really cleaned up a lot. And oh no, I couldn't just do that or sit on a chair or wait," she said. "I just hopped on the bed, laid down took a selfie: 'Look where I am! Surprise!"

Pilling texted the selfie to her daughter with the text, "Look where I am! Where are you?"

McKenna's response was: "Where's that?? I'm in my dorm. Please tell me you're not in someone else's dorm."

The embarrassing realization came at that point.

"I am in the wrong dorm, OMG," Pilling texted.

"Oh my gosh, and fear and panic, because I had said hi to several people on the way in," Pilling said. "I don't know what they thought, like, 'Who is this woman?'"

McKenna took it in stride.

"I just started laughing and I ran out of my room and went and found her in my building," she said.

McKenna also tweeted a screen shot of her mother's selfie fail, and since the weekend, it has been retweeted more than 15,000 times and favorited more than 32,000 times.

"It just got bigger and bigger and I was like, 'Wow, everyone thinks this is really funny,'" McKenna said.

The mistake may now be something to laugh about, but Deanna Pilling had no idea it would be seen by so many.

"I was like, 'Oh I'm going to be so cool. I'm going to take a selfie and send it to her,'" she said.

Deanna Pilling said she probably won't be sending her daughter another selfie any time soon.
