Family Fight Ends In Gunfire In Bronx Apartment Building
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A vicious fight among family members in the hallway of a Bronx apartment building ended in gunfire early Wednesday morning.
A 20-year-old woman was shot in the face and stomach by her stepfather just before 4 a.m. during a fight with her sister and their parents on the 14th floor of the Morris Houses in Claremont, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.
The victim was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where she is in serious but stable condition.
The victim's mother, Jeannette Meredith, said her daughter is homeless and was trying to break into her apartment, so her husband stepped in.
"It was self-defense," she said. "They were trying to attack us and hurt us. They had a steak knife with them."
"He just took it out and fired a couple of shots just to scare them so they would go away," Meredith added. "They tried to stab me and beat me up."
A knife was recovered at the scene, Schuck reported.
The victim told police she's nearly two months pregnant, but her mother said she's lying.
"She's not pregnant; she's just saying that to get pity," Meredith said. "That's my daughter, she's not pregnant."
Arthur Meredith, 38, is in custody.
The investigation is ongoing.
