Woman Claims 4 Headless Geese Found In New Rochelle Park
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An investigation is underway in Westchester County after a woman said she found the carcasses of four headless geese in a New Rochelle park.
Kristie Kelly said she was walking her dog in Huguenot Park early Wednesday morning when she discovered the decapitated Canada geese lined up end to end.
"There were no heads on any of the geese and there was no heads anywhere to be found in the area," Kelly told WCBS 880's Sean Adams.
Kelly does not believe this was the work of a wild animal because she did not see any bite marks on any of the carcasses.
"I would assume if it was an animal they would have eaten the body," Kelly said. "It freaked me out, I got really nervous and that's when I realized that it probably wasn't some wild animal just trying to grab a feast it was the work of some weirdo. I was very upset."
The Parks Department recovered only one goose and concluded it was attacked by an animal, Ernest Lungaro, director of enforcement at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Westchester, said.
"By the time that they recovered it, which was 1 o'clock in the afternoon, they reported that the goose had been attacked by another animal and that was based on an observation of bite marks," Lungaro told 1010 WINS. "We weren't notified until much later. New Rochelle Police Department was notified after 8 o'clock that night; when they went to investigate, as well as my department, we did not see any of the geese."
Since the SPCA was unable to perform necropsies to determine cause of death, they are investigating the incident as a possible criminal act.
"We don't know what happened," Lungaro said. "We're treating it as a crime; we've been doing interviews, we did a canvass of that immediate area, we talked to local residents."
