Woman, 66, struck and killed by pickup truck while pushing stroller in Brooklyn
NEW YORK -- A Brooklyn grandmother was killed and her grandchild was injured after police they were run over by a driver on Tuesday afternoon.
That driver remained on the scene.
The intersection of Bath Avenue and 25th Street in Bath Beach was closed off after police say a pickup truck driver slammed into the 66-year-old woman and her 2-year-old grandchild.
"My kids were at school and when I came back everything was crazy, police everywhere," Sihem Amari said.
Amari, who lives two houses from the accident site, watched the horror unfold.
"Only police and the stroller of the baby. I was crying, to be honest. I saw the baby bottle on the floor," Amari said.
Investigators say around 1 p.m. a 56-year-old man driving the truck was making a right turn onto Bath Avenue, when he somehow hit the woman and the child. On cellphone video he is seen looking panicked and confused after quickly realizing what had happened.
"It's sad because it's a very quiet neighborhood," parent Maria Andres said.
Some said they've been concerned about vehicles in the intersection for years.
"Cars. Every time, I see cars speeding when they are turning," one person said.
So much so that some said they walk on the streets defensively.
"Even if it's my light, I wait because some of them just go through the light. They don't (give) the pedestrian, give them the right of way," Andres said.
And now they are dealing with a loss of life so close to home.
"I just brought them back from Arabic school and I was holding their hands so tight. I can't imagine something like that happen to me," one resident said.
Police said the child was rushed to Maimonides Medical and is stable, adding there was no criminality involved in the accident.
