CBS2 Exclusive: $1M Powerball Winner On Long Island Claims His Prize

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- One winning Powerball ticket was sold in Indiana on Wednesday with an estimated jackpot of $435 million, but some local people also won a small fortune.

The numbers were 10-13-28-52-61 and Powerball 2. Wednesday's drawing was the first time in nearly three months that the jackpot climbed above $400 million.

The odds of winning? One in 292.2 million.

Powerball says there was one Match Five Power Play winner -- a ticket bought in New Jersey now worth $2 million. Two tickets sold in New York also hit the Match Five, winning $1 million each.

Powerball said there were also 255,311 other winners in New York State for the Feb. 22 drawing.

Of the New York tickets, one was sold at a 7-Eleven location on Montauk Highway in Center Moriches, Powerball said. The second ticket was sold in Rochester.

"In my town, a million dollars in my town!" one Center Moriches resident said.

"This is the first time I've seen the big winner. I'm excited, you know," 7-Eleven employee Jorge Castro said.

CBS2's Jennifer McLogan was at the store when the second-place winner, a man named Chris, arrived to claim his prize. He matched all five numbers, except the Poweball, and snapped a photo with an over-sized cardboard check.

"I'm very private, I don't want to show my face. But I'm excited, and it's going to help toward my retirement and my wife," he said.

His wife, Laurie, said their life is about to change "dramatically."

"I would say, set up some trust funds for our grandchildren, buy a retirement home," she said.

Some people McLogan spoke with said they wondered if their relationships would change.

"It's a lot of anxiety," one man said.

"We're getting a divorce. So if he makes a million dollars, maybe I'll be entitled to half of it," a woman said.

"The winner is getting closer and closer to me," a man added.

"Buy a house locally," one man said.

"Help the poor," one woman said.

The top prize drops back to $40 million for the next drawing Saturday night.

Powerball is played in 44 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are incredibly small, at one in 292.2 million.
