Bronx Crash Leaves 1 Dead, 4 Injured

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One person was killed and four others were injured in a two-car crash in the Bronx Sunday morning.

Police were called just before 5 a.m. to the scene of the accident at Bronxwood Avenue and East 219th Street in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx.

"Just screeching, loud bang and then a lot of people screaming," an unidentified witness told CBS2's Steve Langford.

A 28-year-old man had been driving a BMW south on Bronxwood Avenue and struck a Cadillac headed east on 219th Street, police said. The crash caused the vehicles to strike three parked cars and flipped the Cadillac on its side, police said.

As smoke began to billow from the SUV,  neighbors came running and found one man in grave condition.

The driver of the Cadillac – identified as Michael Rhone, 39, of the Bronx – was pronounced dead at Jacobi, police said.

The driver of the BMW and his 29-year-old female passenger were taken to Jacobi Medical Center in critical condition, police said. A 16-year-old boy and a 30-year-old man were also taken to Jacobi in critical condition, police said.

"Very upsetting. I'm still upset because it's something you don't see on a Sunday or on any day to jar out of bed for something like this," a witness said.

The accident was under investigation Sunday evening. It was not known if there was any criminality, or if anyone ran a light or stop sign.
