Why PSE&G IN New Jersey, But Just PSEG On Long Island?
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Some consumers have noticed that the electric company that serves Long Island and the one that serves most of New Jersey have two different names, even though they are part of the same company.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, in New Jersey, the New Jersey utility is known as PSE&G. But on Long Island, the ampersand is missing – it is just PSEG Long Island.
Spokesman Jeff Weir explained that some of the initials actually stand for different words depending on the branch of the company in question.
"So the parent company PSEG stands for Public Service Enterprise Group. And in New Jersey the utility there is Public Service Electric and Gas. PSE&G," Weir said. "On Long Island we are PSEG Long Island. That's the brand and it doesn't stand for anything, and we are a subsidiary of PSEG -- Public Service Enterprise Group."
The Newark-based PSEG won a 12-year, $5 billion contract to take over LIPA. The takeover took effect Jan. 1.
