White Plains Facility Offers Free Robotic Rehab To Veterans
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Some military veterans are learning that robotic rehab is not science fiction.
As WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported, at Burke Rehabilitation Center in White Plains, a robotic arm initiates and guides Army veteran and stroke victim Tom Kastner's affected limb with the hope of retraining the nerves.
"It's helped me a lot also with fine motor movements with your arm and your hand, which I don't have use of, but we're working on it still," Kastner said.
Robotic-assisted therapy is free for veterans at Burke.
Vietnam-era vet Steve Harkavy also suffered a stroke. He's learning how to walk again with an exoskeleton, a bionic body brace.
"It helped me lift my foot, just to concentrate on the proper way to step," he said. "It was difficult because ... I was fighting the machine. But after the first session, I was able to pick it up fairly easily."
