When It Comes To Staying Healthy Experts Say Flu Shots Are A Winter Must
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- It's not winter yet, but the season's best friend, the flu, is alive and well in the city and the rest of New York.
As 1010 WINS reporter Carol D'Auria found out, a lot of people think they know the best way to stay healthy and not catch the flu.
"Grandma's remedies. I know that during the winter time I need to drink a cup of orange juice every morning," one man said.
"Just vitamin C, tea, stay warm, keep a hat on my head, and pray," a woman added.
But medical experts say flu shots are the best bet for staying healthy over the winter. Health care workers who do not get vaccinated will be required to wear masks while around patients.
"Flu shots are a safe and effective way to reduce your risk for infection during flu season and I urge all New Yorkers to get one," said Acting New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker. "Unfortunately, not all health care workers choose to get vaccinated. By requiring those who are not vaccinated to wear masks while around patients, we're doing all we can to protect the most vulnerable, like the sick and the elderly."
The flu is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
