WFAN's Carton Takes Olbermann To Task For Jeter Diatribe
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- WFAN co-host Craig Carton is taking an "out-of-touch" Keith Olbermann to task for his take on Derek Jeter, who the ESPN host says is nowhere near the top of the list of Yankees greats.
Olbermann ripped apart Jeter's stats, mystique and farewell tour for nearly seven minutes to open his show Tuesday. Carton believed it was a grasp at attention, nothing more.
"Keith Olbermann is a desperate, insecure, irrelevant television broadcaster who took seven minutes to tell the world why Derek Jeter is an average, pedestrian ballplayer," the "Boomer & Carton" co-host said Wednesday. "Why would he do that? For this reason right here -- that a show that has ratings and listeners and viewers would actually talk about you. The reality is this: it was a cheap stunt to get people to talk about how there's a lone voice in the wilderness taking shots at Derek Jeter.
"You have achieved nothing in your ESPN career, or the ninth version of it. So why not enjoy the fact that there's a baseball player we can all look up to who did it right, who didn't put drugs in his body, and who represented everything great about baseball and about being a professional athlete."
So there you have it.
