Feds Award $10M For Bus Transit In Lower Hudson Valley

ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York state will receive $10 million in federal money for bus transit service between Rockland and Westchester counties.

Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced the funding award Monday. Gillibrand says the grant will pay for "critical upgrades'' on the new Tappan Zee Bridge being built over the Hudson River.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo hailed the funding as a "major step'' in helping improve transportation in the lower Hudson Valley that will ultimately reduce congestion.

Specifically the money will pay for the construction of new bus stations, transit lanes and other improvements to make transit faster and more reliable.

"I pushed the Obama administration hard and strongly supported this grant so I'm very glad that funds are being delivered to help local commuters," Congresswoman Nita Lowey told WCBS 880. "New Yorkers send their hard-earned tax dollars to Washington every day, so this is an important return on that investment that will provide better transportation options so Hudson Valley commuters can enjoy faster and safer trips."

It will also pay for new signals to help motorists as well as upgrades to increase pedestrian safety.
