Stories From Main Street: Westchester Center Helps Women Trapped In Abusive Relationships

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Westchester is trying to spread the word about a special service that helps women trapped in abusive relationships.

Christine Redfield no longer suffers in silence.

"I'm actually a survivor of domestic violence," Redfield told WCBS 880's Sean Adams.

She hopes her story will encourage other women still trapped in the shadows.

"I was involved in a relationship for about 13 years," Redfield said. "All different types of violence -- physical, mental, emotional, financial."

When she finally chose to leave, Redfield said she got help at the Family Justice Center.

"I went in to them and they provided lots of services, support," Redfield said. "They have shelters, they helped me find legal representation, because I couldn't afford it."

All of the services to help survivors of domestic abuse under one roof, says Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino.

"Often times women of domestic violence don't know where to turn and so they stay in an abusive relationship and we want them to know they shouldn't stay in an abusive relationship," Astorino said. "There is help. It is confidential and despite the problems that they're facing, which sometimes seem insurmountable, we can help them get through it and in one location."

The Junior League of Central Westchester recently put on a day of pampering for survivors of domestic violence, transforming the county center into a spa.

"We have some soothing music; we have robes for them to put on; we have soft socks; we have necklaces; we have gift bags full of toiletries and other necessities that they may need," said president Allison Messerle. "They can get massages and facials. They can get their nails done and their makeup done."

Redfield wants other women to know they are not alone.

"I feel empowered now," Redfield said. "I feel like I have a voice and that voice can be shared with other people to help them."
