Five hospitalized in West Milford, New Jersey house explosion, police say
WEST MILFORD, N.J. -- Five people were hospitalized after an explosion at a home in West Milford, New Jersey on Friday night, police said.
The house was heavily damaged by the explosion at around 9 p.m., the West Milford Police Department said in a statement.
Chopper 2 was over the scene as firefighters searched through the collapsed rubble on Banker Road.
Neighbors told CBS New York they heard a loud bang before 911 callers reported a possible explosion.
The cause of the explosion was not immediately known. But a large dumpster could be seen in the driveway of the home, so it's possible construction was going on at the time.
Police said the victims were transported by helicopter, including two to Morristown Medical Center, one to St. Joseph's University Medical Center in Paterson, one to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, and one to Hackensack University Medical Center.
Their conditions were unknown as of Saturday morning.
A sixth person at the scene refused additional medical treatment, according to police.
The explosion is under investigation by West Milford detectives and the fire marshal's offices from the town and state, police said.
