Group Secretly Recording, Posting Private Conversations From NYC Restaurants

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- How would you like your intimate dinner conversation recorded as you talk about your most private moments or, worse, talk about someone behind their back?

As 1010 WINS' Derricke Dennis reported, that's what a group claiming to be protesters of the National Security Agency is doing -- secretly recording the restaurant chitchat of unsuspecting diners in the East Village, Union Square and Brooklyn.

In one conversation, a man talks about playing a prank on a so-called friend. In another, a group of Asian males were recorded belittling another Asian behind his back.

In one case, a woman is heard talking about her TV viewing plans at her gym in Union Square on a recorder placed underneath her weight bench.

The group is posting the conversations on the website WeAreAlwaysListening.com as its way of protesting what it says is unlawful mass surveillance. But the recordings appear to violate state laws against secretly taping conversations.

It urges anyone who doesn't like its tactics to contact their government representative.
