Water Main Break Closes 2 Blocks Of Central Park West, Snags Subways
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A water main break shut down two blocks of Central Park West on the Upper West Side Wednesday night, cut power to three buildings, and disrupted subway service in the area.
The 12-inch water main ruptured at 96th Street, and shut down Central Park West between 95th and 97th streets, city officials told CBS2.
At least three buildings were left without electrical power as a result of the main break, but it did not appear that any residents lost power, the Department of Environmental Protection said.
Because of the main break, C trains were running express between 125th and 59th streets, and southbound A and D train service – which usually runs express along that route – was expected to be delayed.
B Train service was shut down altogether.
Subway service had returned to normal by 10:20 p.m., but bus service remained suspended.
City Councilwoman Helen Rosenthal (D-6th) advised that the street could remain closed through Thursday morning and the morning commute could be snagged.
The DEP succeeded in shutting off the main and was making repairs late Wednesday.
