NYC officials announce expansion of Summer Streets

NEW YORK -- New York City's Summer Streets program is coming back this year, bigger than ever. 

The program shuts down select streets to cars, making room for people to play, walk and bike. 

City officials spoke about this year's expansion Monday.

"We are now saying Summer Streets is going to be a five borough initiative," Mayor Eric Adams said.

"This summer, we will have the largest ever expansion of Summer Streets ever, doubling the number of miles to 20 miles," added DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. 

Summer Streets will operate during its traditional hours between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The fun starts Saturday, July 29 in Queens and Staten Island. Then, the summer celebration moves to Manhattan on Saturday, August 5, 12 and 19, and to Brooklyn and the Bronx on Saturday, August 26.
