Police Find Powerful Guns During Traffic Stop In Washington Heights
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man was arrested in Washington Heights this week after police allegedly found two powerful firearms upon pulling over his vehicle.
Anti-Crime officers from the 33rd Precinct saw a man driving a red 2000 Dodge Durango sport-utility vehicle in erratically in near Broadway and 174th Street around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
Sgt. Anderson Ortiz and officers Dwight Powell and John Coil pulled over the vehicle in front of 4116 Broadway, where a Shell gas station is located. In the vehicle, they found an Inter Ordnance AK-47 assault rifle, a Stoeger Industries double-barreled shotgun, two 30-round magazines, 325 shotgun rounds, 86 7.62 rounds, and 2.5 ounces of marijuana, police said.
The driver, Cleon, Cortez, 42, of Lorris, South Carolina, was arrested at the scene, police said.
He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and firearm, criminal and unlawful possession of marijuana, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, police said.
