Tornado Confirmed In Warren County, N.J. During Thursday Storms
WHITE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A tornado was confirmed in Warren County, New Jersey during a round of severe storms that plowed through the area on Thursday.
The National Weather Service confirmed that tornado was spotted near White Township at 2:46 p.m. Thursday. The tornado was an EF0 on the Fujita scale – the lowest rating.
The estimated maximum wind speed was 75 mph, the maximum path with was 75 yards, and the path length was 2.8 miles.
Storms brought torrential rain and blasts of lightning all around the area before moving on just as fast and leaving sunny skies Thursday afternoon.
The storms brought 4 inches of rain per hour, 300 lightning strikes per hour, winds of 60 mph or more, and hail of .5 inch diameter.
The storms also brought serious damage in some areas taking down trees in many parts of New Jersey and flooding busy Tonnelle Avenue in Jersey City – leaving cars stranded.
In Fort Lee, lightning from the storm was blamed for a fire in a duplex house under construction.
Lightning also struck the ground on the beach in Long Beach, leaving five people injured.
