Vigil Held In Central Park To Remember Newtown Shooting
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A vigil to end gun violence was held in Central Park Saturday, commemorating four years since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Ashley Cech was in attendance. Her mother was a librarian at the school the day of the shooting.
"I couldn't really believe that there was a shooting at my mom's school," she said. "Something about gun violence in the town of Newtown just is not something that seems like it goes together."
When the violence began, Yvonne Cech hid the children in her care in a utility closet and barricaded the door with a filing cabinet.
"For many hours, we didn't have a way of knowing if she was one of those people who had been killed or if she was alive somewhere," Ashley said.
Yvonne and her students survived. Ever since that day, Ashley has dedicated her life to end gun violence.
She told WCBS 880's Mike Smeltz that the reason her family originally moved to Newtown was because of how safe it was.
"Sometimes I have days thinking that there's no way that could have really happened in the tiny, sleepy little town of Newtown, Connecticut," she said.
At today's vigil, Ashley was joined by others who spoke about the urgency and need for stronger laws to prevent something like Newtown from happening again.
