Vigil Held For New Jersey College Student Who Was Found Beaten To Death

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- An emotional vigil was held Wednesday to remember a college student who was found beaten to death near Rutgers University.

The body of William McCaw, a 22-year-old Kean University student, was found just before 10:30 a.m. Saturday in a backyard on Hartwell Street near Rutgers University.

On Wednesday, more than 200 students, friends and family members gathered on the Rutgers campus to remember McCaw.

McCaw's father lit the first candle in memory of his son. Tears flowed as candles were raised in a moment of silence.

"Me and my friends – we basically just sat in our house the last three or four days – just talking about him; telling stories; just going over everything that we've done with him; just trying to remember him as best we can," said McCaw's friend Matthew Oeftering.

McCaw had previously attended Rutgers University, but transferred last semester to Kean University. He was back near the Rutgers campus visiting his old fraternity brothers when somehow he ran into trouble, CBS 2's Weijia Jiang reported this past weekend.

The area where his body was found is mostly off-campus housing for Rutgers University students who said the neighborhood is known for its partying, Jiang reported.

Investigators have asked anyone with information to come forward to help them solve the mystery.
