Video: 105-Year-Old Woman Throws Out First Pitch At Mets-Padres Game
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's been proven yet again: age is just a number.
Prior to the Mets' game against the Padres on Sunday, a 105-year-old woman threw out the first pitch as part of San Diego's long-standing tradition of honoring members of the military.
Agnes McKee's late husband, Harry, who fought in the Navy during World War II, died back in 2008 just shy of his 99th birthday.
A group from McKee's retirement home, Fairwinds-Ivey Ranch Retirement Community in Oceanside, Calif., was planning a trip to the game and a staff member decided to called the Padres to ask if they had interest in having McKee, who celebrated a birthday last week, throw out the first pitch, MLB.com reported.
"From there, it just exploded," said Jane McKee, Agnes' daughter.
Agnes McKee used a walker to move out to the area between the mound and the plate at Petco Park, and as the fans went crazy, she wound up and delivered an underhand pitch that bounced to Padres catcher Rene Rivera.
"All pitchers have trouble with control," Agnes McKee told MLB.com with a smile.
She said she practiced throwing both underhand and overhand at her retirement home in the days leading up to her big moment, which she took in stride.
"I don't feel nervous I guess because these [questions] have been going on for two weeks," Agnes McKee said. "I didn't realize what I was getting into.
"It's an exciting time. I'm proud to be able to do it."
