Vesey Street Fences Moved To Make More Room For Pedestrians
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A small but subtle change near the World Trade Center PATH station is making a big difference for residents and commuters.
The stretch of Vesey Street between Church and West Broadway was a narrow passageway leading to and from the station known as the "Vesey Squeezy."
Community Board 1 Chair Catherine McVay Hughes said the fences have been moved back and now there's more room to move and breathe.
"It's not just about breathing room, it's about conductivity around and through the site as well," she told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell. "What was a cattle corral of people who lived and worked in the neighborhood there is a relief and much more room for the pedestrian."
The move is bringing a sense normalcy back to the neighborhood.
"The site is being reincorporated into the surrounding community after 13 years and everybody's very excited about it," she said.
More fencing will come down when 1 World Trade Center opens.
