1 Dead When Vehicle Is Hit By Non-Passenger Train On LIRR Tracks In Brentwood

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- One person was killed late Monday when a vehicle was struck by non-passenger train on the Long Island Rail Road tracks in Brentwood, Long Island.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said the female driver of the car was killed in the incident. Her name was not being released late Thursday night.

It appeared that the woman drove around the gates, CBS2's Valerie Castro has learned.

The MTA said the train involved was an empty equipment train that was headed back to the city.

Such trains are cleared to go 80 mph. It is possible that the train was going 80 mph when it hit the car, but the MTA said it was not known if the train engineer was able to apply the brakes.

Service was suspended between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma following the accident. By 10 p.m., service had been restored but with residual delays.
