Victims Say Vandals Broke Windows, Stole From Cars In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Vandals went on a rampage overnight in Brooklyn, leaving in their wake a dozen or so car owners with broken windows and stolen property.

For Patricia Lee, it was a disturbing sight coming back to her parked car to find windows broken and valuables missing, CBS 2's John Slattery reported.

"I feel like crying, but I can't," she said. "All I can say is pray for whoever's doing this."

The extensive damage was found Tuesday morning in a public parking area under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway near Cumberland Avenue in the Fort Greene section of the borough.

Witnesses told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern they saw four men in their 20s break into the cars at about 4:30 a.m.

According to police, at least nine car owners reported damage. Victims said there were a dozen or more, with some of the cars already driven away.

The vandals smashed windows and stole items including GPS systems, cash and clothing, Slattery reported.

Victim Joshua Burgos said he parks in the area all the time and has never seen this happen before.

Nao Matsumoto, who also said he parks there frequently, said it's never happened before, but that there's always the risk.

"If you park overnight, it's pretty desolate, it's pretty dark," Matsumoto said. "What can you do, right?"

Insurance claims and paying deductibles out-of-pocket will be costly for some of those who suffered damage, Slattery reported.

"$600 dollars and rent is due," said Lee. "My son's birthday is Friday. That just took away from my son."

It appears the cars that were hit were parked in an area where there were no surveillance cameras.
