U.S. Women's Soccer Team To Be Honored With Parade In New York City On Friday

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — A ticker tape parade will be held in Lower Manhattan for the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team this coming Friday, the Mayor's office announced.

Mayor Bill de Blasio will join the team for the parade beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, according to the Mayor's office.

As anticipated, the parade will be held in the Canyon of Heroes, along Broadway from the Battery to City Hall.

The parade is open to all. Fans may also go to nyc.gov/parade or call 311 on Wednesday between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to sign up for a chance to attend a special program at City Hall.

A trip to New York for a parade in the Canyon of Heroes was first suggested by Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer who wrote to the mayor, urging him to honor the women with a parade.

"All types of families -- and a large immigrant community will be coming to this parade because they love soccer, so you'd have New Yorkers, suburbanites," Brewer said. "I must admit my excitement would be young women who can see that there's a possibility for them."

Brewer released a statement following the announcement of the parade Tuesday.

"This team will turn the Canyon of Heroes into the Canyon of Heroines. It will be a history-making parade for a history-making group of athletes. With an emphatic victory that captivated a record-breaking national audience, they have demonstrated how far we've come," Brewer said in the statement. "I thank Mayor de Blasio for authorizing the parade, and I'm looking forward to helping his team put it together."

The U.S. team arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Monday, and on Tuesday, they appeared at the L.A. Live entertainment complex next to Staples Center for a free public celebration.

It was the first U.S. stop for the team since beating Japan 5-2 in the Women's World Cup final Sunday in Canada.
