Streets Reopened Following Manhole Explosions On Upper East Side
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A cluster of manhole explosions on the Upper East Side closed several blocks for nearly three hours during the Tuesday evening rush.
Authorities say two manholes dislodged on First Avenue between 70th and 72nd Streets around 5 p.m.
Con Edison says an underground cable fire caused the explosion which rendered a residential building at 402 E. 72nd St. without power briefly.
1st Avenue between 70th and 72nd Streets were shut down for several hours but have since reopened.
A separate fire was reported at 70th Street and 1st Avenue Tuesday evening at a manhole owned by Verizon. It isn't clear whether or not the two incidents are related.
No injuries have been reported at this time.
