Smash-And-Grab Robbery Leads To Frightening Moments At Madison Avenue Luxury Watch Store

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are looking for two suspects after a smash-and-grab armed robbery at a luxury watch store on the Upper East Side Monday morning.

Two men armed with guns, dressed in dark clothes and with scarves covering their faces entered the Jaeger-LeCoultre store on Madison Avenue between 62nd and 63rd streets.

The store is one of several high-end jewelry boutiques in the area. Witnesses said they couldn't believe an armed robbery could happen in broad daylight.

"The cops were just pouring in," one man told CBS2's Hazel Sanchez. "We thought it had something to do with Trump."

This had noting to do with the president-elect.

Police said they were dealing with a brazen armed robbery. A store worker down the street said she was afraid for her own safety, and didn't want to show her face.

"I'm scared to death because I'm here by myself every morning, so it could have happened to me," she said.

Police said late Monday morning, the two men stormed the watch shop, and announced that a robbery was underway.

Police said one robber forced three employees to lie on the ground, while the other smashed the display cases. The robbers got away with 7 watches worth half a million dollars.

Just minutes before the robbery, customer Erich Junger said he called to make an appointment to see some of the watches and was stunned to find the cops there when he arrived.

"I decided to go to another meeting first, that's scary," he said.

Police said the robbers ran off without hurting any of the employees, they are reviewing surveillance video along the street and inside the store as well.
