NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A United Airlines flight headed to Chicago aborted takeoff Friday morning at Newark Liberty Airport.

The plane was moving at a high rate of speed just before 6:30 a.m. when the takeoff was aborted and smoke could be seen coming from the plane when the brakes locked up, CBS2 reported.

The plane has been taxied back to the terminal.

United says it is not clear what caused the issue, but it is working to get passengers to Chicago as soon as possible.
