Suspect arrested after police chase, shootout in Nassau County

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- There was a shootout overnight between a robbery suspect and police during a wild chase in Nassau County.

Police say it started when officers tried to pull over a stolen car in Uniondale, but the driver took off and hit another vehicle, injuring the person inside.

When officers tried to approach, the suspect fired two shots, and officers returned fire. No one was hit, but bullet holes marked both cars.

The suspect took off yet again, eventually ditching the car and running away on foot.

"The individual takes his gun and puts it to his head, and he starts to speak to my officers, looking for suicide by cop ... They do not fire. The subject then jumps the fence and runs again," Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said.

The suspect was arrested. Police say he's a 20-year-old gang member who is also wanted for attempted murder.

One officer dislocated his knee during the pursuit.
