Underage Drinking Incident Shuts Down Fraternity At Rutgers
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A fraternity at Rutgers University has been shut down because of an incident involving underage drinking.
University officials said they have been told that Sigma Phi Epsilon's national headquarters has suspended the Rutgers chapter and has no plans to reinstate it.
The university told NJ.com that without the backing of the national group, the fraternity is history at Rutgers.
Fraternity officials said a 20-year-old member was taken to a hospital on Nov. 1 because he was in an "intoxicated state" after drinking at the fraternity house.
Rutgers said six fraternities and one sorority are under review for alcohol violations.
A 19-year-old Rutgers student died of alcohol poisoning in September after drinking at another fraternity house.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Caitlyn Kovacs, of South Brunswick, appeared to be in distress while attending a gathering at the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity house early on a Sunday morning in September.
Several friends took the sophomore to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she later died.
