Semi-Trailer Truck Flips Over On George Washington Bridge; Wind Blamed
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A semi-trailer truck flipped over on the George Washington Bridge Wednesday night, and police sources said strong winds were to blame.
A source told CBS2's Tony Aiello the truck was headed east toward New York City and flipped over – and into the westbound lanes – due to high winds.
There was also a diesel fuel spill reported, the source said. The trailer was reported to be empty, the source said.
No injuries were immediately reported in the accident, the source said.
A high wind alert and a tractor trailer ban were issued for the upper level of the George Washington Bridge in both directions late Wednesday.
All other motorists were advised to drive over the bridge at reduced speed.
The upper level headed to New Jersey was experiencing delays of 30 to 40 minutes, according to Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police.
Winds of up to 50 mph were reported in some areas late Wednesday as storms blasted through the area.
