Trip To Dinner Turns Into Heroic Night For Dix Hills Firefighter
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A volunteer assistant fire chief in Dix Hills was on his way to dinner on Saturday night, when a call came in. By the end of the night he had saved a life.
"Happened to be right there when the call came in," Alan Berkowitz told WCBS 880's Ginny Kosola.
Berkowitz, who works as a Federal Administrative Law Judge in Brooklyn, was near the Elwood Cinemas when he received a call about a 67-year-old man who was in cardiac arrest.
Chief Berkowitz had his equipment and performed CPR.
"Shocked him with the defibrillator. The pulse came back and stayed back," he said.
By the time paramedics arrived to assist, the man was breathing on his own.
"There's about 100 people in the theater clapping. The wife came up to us and was extremely appreciative," Berkowitz said.
The man was taken to Huntington Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.
