Greatest Olympians Ever From Tri-State Area
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The tri-state area has never produced an Olympian quite like Michael Phelps, who, as of Tuesday night, is at 21 gold medals, but it has produced its share of athletes who have left their marks on the Summer Games.
Here's a look at some of the area's best.
CARMELO ANTHONY, Basketball
Anthony, who was born in Red Hook, Brooklyn, has won two gold medals and a bronze -- and he's aiming for a third gold this year. On Monday, he passed Michael Jordan for third place on the USA's all-time Olympic scoring list.
BRUCE BAUMGARTNER, Wrestling
The Haledon, New Jersey, native, is widely regarded as the greatest freestyle heavyweight wrestler in American history. He won gold in 1984 and 1992, silver in 1988 and bronze in 1996.
BOB BEAMON, Track And Field
In Mexico City in 1968, Beamon, who is from Jamaica, Queens, set an Olympic record that still stands today -- a long jump of 29 feet, 2 1/4 inches. That performance accounted for his lone gold medal.
HOWARD DAVIS JR., Boxing
Davis, who was born and raised in Glen Cove, Long Island, won a lightweight gold medal and the Val Barker Trophy as the most outstanding boxer at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
RAY EWRY, Track And Field
Ewry won eight gold medals from 1900 to 1908 in the standing long jump, standing high jump and standing triple jump -- all events that are now defunct. Ewry was born and raised in Indiana, but moved to New York after finishing college.
BRUCE JENNER, Decathlon
The Westchester County native, now known as Caitlyn Jenner, set a world record en route to winning a gold medal in Montreal in 1976.
MICHAEL JORDAN, Basketball
The Brooklyn-born superstar won two gold medals -- as a college player in 1984 and as part of the "Dream Team" in 1992.
AL OERTER, Discus
Oerter, who was born in Queens and raised in New Hyde Park, won gold medals in the 1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968 Summer Games.
MICHAEL PLUMB, Equestrian
Born in Islip and raised in Syosset, Plumb won six medals -- two team gold, three team silver and one individual silver in eventing from 1964 to 1984.
