Tim Cluess Locked In As Iona Gaels Coach Through 2018-19
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Tim Cluess has been given a contract extension by Iona through 2018-19 after leading the Gaels to two NCAA tournaments in his first four seasons.
The school announced the deal Thursday, two days before the Gaels (20-9) open play as the No. 1 seed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament. Iona finished 17-3 in the conference this season, a school record for MAAC wins.
"The success Coach Cluess has had since arriving at Iona has been almost unprecedented," Iona athletic director Rick Cole Jr. said in a statement. "We're very excited to have him on board for at least another five years. His commitment to the overall success of his student-athletes is what makes Coach Cluess the right man for Iona."
Cluess is 90-43 at Iona and the fifth-winningest coach in school history. He is the first Gaels coach to win at least 20 games in each of his first four seasons.
He led Iona to the NCAA tournament in 2012 and 2013. The Gaels won the MAAC regular season in 2012 and 2014 and won the conference tournament in 2013.
Iona president Dr. Joseph E. Nyre said the school "couldn't be more pleased with his tremendous accomplishments on and off the court."
"I'm very proud to be a part of the Iona College Community," Cluess said. "We will continue to work hard to build on our recent success on the court and I'm very appreciative of the support Dr. Nyre and our administration has given us."
